Dear Nahant Residents,
In accordance with Federal Drinking Water Regulations the MWRA and Town of Nahant have prepared this 2023 Drinking Water Report. The Town receives all of its drinking water from the MWRA.
All water supplied to Nahant is metered at the Nahant Rotary. This water is distributed through 26 miles of water distribution pipeline throughout town ranging in sizes from 4 to 16 inches in diameter serving approximately 1400 service connections. Water meters are read three times per year using an Automatic Remote Reading System. The average daily consumption was 360,000 gallons per day. Leak detection is performed annually throughout the distribution system, and as needed based on water consumption.
Drinking water samples are taken twice a month and sent to the MWRA laboratory for bacteria analysis. Lead and copper sampling under the MassDEP Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) is performed once per year. All samples were well within Federal and State regulations in 2023. Water samples were taken from one school and 10 residences in Nahant in 2023 to be tested for lead as required by the LCR. The 90th percentile for lead in these samples was 3.6 ppb (parts per billion), well below the Action Level of 15 ppb. The 90th percentile for copper in these samples was 131 ppb, below the Action Level of 1300 ppb.

In 2023, with assistance through the MWRA Loan Program, the Town completed the design and permitting for the upgrades to water systems on Fox Hill Road and Emerald Road. These projects are scheduled to be completed in Spring of 2024. Leak detection was conducted on the system town-wide and all leaks discovered during detection were repaired.
