The Town of Weston’s Department of Public Works is pleased to provide this annual water quality report to our customers, in accordance with state and federal regulations. This report also reminds you of the great effort the MWRA and Weston Water Division undertake to provide potable water that meets every applicable federal, state or local standard.
WESTON’S WATER SYSTEM:
The Weston Water Division maintains 116 miles of water distribution mains, 979 fire hydrants, and 3,613 water service connections. In 2023, the Town of Weston consumed 493 million gallons of water, a decrease of 138 million gallons of water from the previous year. Weston’s daily average consumption for 2023 was 1.3 million gallons of water. The highest volume daily was 3,270,000 gallons of water on May 31st, 2023.
LEAK DETECTION:
The Town of Weston undergoes an annual leak detection survey to find water leaks in the distribution system. This year’s survey found twelve (12) leaking fire hydrants and one (1) leaking water service that were promptly repaired.
BACKFLOW PREVENTION:
The Town of Weston continues to enforce the DEP mandated cross connection control and prevention program to prevent contamination of the public water distribution system. The Town conducted 540 backflow prevention device tests at 97 facilities in 2023. Eight (8) devices failed and were re-tested.
HYDRANT FLUSHING & MAINTENANCE PROGRAM:
The Water Division completed the annual comprehensive flushing program to remove naturally occurring sediments, which could cause taste, odor, and turbidity problems for consumers. Four (4) fire hydrants had operational issues during our annual Fire Hydrant Flushing & Maintenance Program. Four (4) hydrants were refurbished and nine (9) were replaced with new models. We added 1 hydrant to the water distribution system.
WATER SYSTEM MAINTENANCE:
In 2023, the Water Division repaired four (4) water main breaks, replaced nine (9) fire hydrants, and refurbished/rehabilitated four (4) leaking hydrants. We also repaired and oversaw nine (9) water service leaks and inspected 15 water services updated with new water pipes. Two new fire hydrants were added to the system. We added 220 linear feet of cement lined ductile iron water main on Irving Road and extended the water main at the end of Nobscott Road. The Water Division staff upgraded 132 water meters in 2023.
LEAD AND COPPER IN YOUR WATER:
The Town of Weston is concerned about lead and copper in drinking water. Although the water we supply to your home does not contain lead, the Weston Water Division tests water annually in twenty homes that may contain lead service lines, or lead containing plumbing or fixtures. The results of the annual lead and copper testing in our drinking water are shown in the table below. Also, two (2) schools were tested, one public and one private, and both were below the Action Level for lead and copper.
Range | 90% Value | Action Level | MCLG | Samples Over Action Level | |
Lead (ppb) | 0.33–10.8 ppb | 3.5 ppb | 15 ppb | 0 ppb | 0 of 20 |
Copper (ppb) | 27.8–176 ppb | 155 ppb | 1300 ppb | 1300 ppb | 0 of 20 |
ASBESTOS WATER SAMPLING:
The Weston Water Division conducted asbestos water testing in compliance with all DEP regulations. This year a sample was collected at one home associated with an asbestos main. The results of the two samples were: 1st sample had no fibers detected, and the concentration was <0.17 MFL (million fibers per liter). The 2nd sample had a concentration of 0.34 MFL. This was well below the state and federal Regulatory Limit of 7 MFL.
Sample Number | MFL (million fibers per liter) | Regulatory Limit | MCLG |
1 | <0.17 | 7 MFL | No |
2 | 0.34 | 7 MFL | No |
