Public Water Supply
# 3262000

Dear Town of Saugus Water Customer:

This is the calendar year 2022 report on your drinking water. The Saugus Department of Public Works in partnership with the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) delivers water to your tap. This annual report provides detailed information on the MWRA’s source water reservoirs and the quality of water as determined through federal and state testing guidelines. Saugus purchases all of its water from the MWRA. In 2022, the Town delivered approximately 3.3 million gallons per day of water to residents and businesses. The DPW maintains approximately 125 miles of water pipe lines and 9,500 service connections.

Saugus tests the town water distribution system for Total Coliform and 32-40 samples per month are collected and analyzed. The Town had no positive samples for coliform in 2022. Saugus also does lead and copper sampling throughout the community at 20 different locations. The 2022 program was completed in October 2022 and Saugus was again below the action levels of 15 ppb and 1,300 ppb for Lead and Copper respectively. Results are in the table below.

Leak detection is performed twice per year to identify leakage below the road. The leak detection program found 23 leaks. These leaks were repaired, saving an estimated 407,000 gallons per day. The DPW has also replaced 27 fire hydrants, replaced 7 gate valves and 44 water breaks/leaks were repaired.

Saugus Town Meeting serves as the Water Commission for the Town. At these meetings, any relevant water issue, such as water projects and rates, are discussed. These meetings are well publicized in local media and the Town’s website. Meetings took place on May 2, 9, 16, 23, October 24, and November 28, 2022. We hope you find this report informative and useful. If you require more information, or have any questions on the Town’s public meetings or water infrastructure system, please call the DPW at 781-231-4143. Additional phone numbers for MWRA and MassDEP can also be found in this report.

Thank you,

Brendan B. O’Regan Director of Public Works
