Dear Town of Saugus Water Customer:

This is the calendar year 2021 report on your drinking water. The Saugus Department of Public Works in partnership with the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) delivers water to your tap. This annual report provides detailed information on the MWRA’s source water reservoirs and the quality of water as determined through federal and state testing guidelines. The Town of Saugus purchases water from the MWRA. In 2021, the Town delivered approximately 3 million gallons per day of water to residents and businesses. The DPW maintains approximately 125 miles of water pipe lines and 9,500 service connections.

Saugus collects at least 32 samples per month, and they are tested for total coliform. The Town had no positive samples for coliform in 2021. Saugus also conducts lead & copper sampling throughout the community at 15 different locations. The 2021 program was completed in October 2021 and Saugus was again below the Action Levels of 15 ppb and 1,300 ppb for lead and copper. The 90th percentile of the lead and copper sampling was 2.59 ppb and 152 ppb respectively.

Leak detection is performed every year to identify leakage below the surface of the road. The leak detection program found 17 leaks. These leaks were repaired, saving an estimated 152,000 gallons per day. The DPW has also replaced 25 fire hydrants, replaced 6 gate valves and 36 water main breaks and smaller leaks were repaired. The Town also completed water main replacements on Norman Road, Western Ave, Oceanview Ave, Summit Ave, Sapphire Road and Hurd Ave.

Saugus Town Meeting members serve as the Water Commission for the Town. At these meetings, any relevant water issue, such as water projects and rates, are discussed. These meetings are well publicized in local media and the Town’s Website. Meetings took place on May 10 and 24, 2021.

We hope you find this report informative and useful. If you require more information or have any questions on the Town’s water infrastructure system, please call the DPW at 781-231-4143. Additional phone numbers for MWRA and MassDEP can also be found in this report.

Thank you,

Brendan B. O’Regan Director of Public Works
