Dear Nahant Residents,
In accordance with Federal Drinking Water Regulations the MWRA and Town of Nahant have prepared this 2021 Drinking Water Report. The Town receives all of its water from the MWRA.

All water supplied to Nahant is metered at the Nahant Rotary. This water is distributed through 26 miles of water distribution pipeline throughout Town ranging in size from 4 to 16 inches in diameter serving approximately 1400 service connections. Water meters are read three times per year using an Automatic Remote Reading System. The average daily consumption was 370,000 gallons.

Leak Detection is performed annually throughout the Distribution System, and as needed based on water consumption reports. Drinking water samples are taken twice a month and sent to the MWRA Lab for analysis, and lead and copper sampling is performed once per year. All samples were well within Federal and State guidelines. Water samples were taken from the school, as well as 10 residences in Nahant in 2021 to be tested for lead as required by the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR). The 90th percentile for lead in these samples was 10.8 ppb (parts per billion), well below the lead Action Level of 15 ppb. The 90th percent for copper levels in the samples was 142 ppb, below the Action Level of 1300 ppb.

The Town received a notice of non-compliance due to a reporting violation on February 11, 2022. Both the school, and residents of households where sampling is conducted, are required to be notified of the lead and copper test results within 30 days. The school was notified of test results 71 days following receipt of test results, residents were notified 84 days following receipt of test results, resulting in the notice of non-compliance. In accordance with 310 CMR 22.16A(6)(a) the Town is providing this notification to consumers.

In 2021 with assistance through the MWRA Loan Program, the Town has replaced numerous water gate valves and fire hydrants and started design on water main upgrades for spring 2022. Leak detection was conducted on the system town-wide and all leaks found during the detection were repaired.
