Starting the week of Sunday, November 3, 2024, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) will be addressing 100+ year old water system infrastructure located along Francis Parkman Drive in the City of Boston. This work, which will take approximately a month to complete, weather and other unforeseen circumstances pending, will focus on the rehabilitation of a blow-off valve to meet modern standards.
The work zone will be active from 10:00PM to 6:00AM, Sunday through Thursday. To create a safe work environment for crews and to expedite the work, Francis Parkman Drive will be closed to motorists during work hours; however, a detour will be in place (northbound traffic will utilize Jamaicaway and Perkins Street, and southbound traffic can use either Prince Street or Perkins Street to Jamaicaway). During off-work hours, the site will be covered and secured by a steel plate, and Francis Parkman Drive will be available for vehicular traffic to utilize.
While work is being conducted, a police detail will be on site and appropriate signage will be in place to assist with traffic management. Additionally, the pedestrian walkway around Jamaica Pond won’t be closed to pedestrians, but please use caution when near the work zone.
Important to note, water services will not be interrupted as this project progresses. This work may result in discolored water but it is not expected to create any pressure losses. If water discoloration occurs, please run faucets until water returns to normal clarity (it can take up to approximately 10 minutes) before drinking or using for dishes, laundry, or other household needs. Furthermore, the project will likely generate typical noise levels associated with construction work.
