MWRA to Inspect the West Roxbury Tunnel

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) will be conducting an internal inspection of the West Roxbury Wastewater Tunnel, which is part of the Authority’s metropolitan wastewater collection system. The inspection work is weather dependent; however, it is currently scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 2, 2025, and take approximately a week to two weeks to complete (crews cannot enter the tunnel to inspect the infrastructure during any precipitation events).

In order to conduct the work, a three-person crew and a van will be stationed at a manhole located within the sidewalk on New Haven Street in the City of Boston’s West Roxbury neighborhood (the manhole is approximately at the halfway point between Fairlane Road and Stimson Street on the northbound side of New Haven Street). An exhaust fan utilizing a generator to power the equipment will be set up with temporary handrails blocking the sidewalk. The ventilation will be running 24 hours a day throughout the duration of the work. Additionally, there may be some noise or odors, but they are expected to be minimal while work is underway.

Importantly, no disruptions of water service, sewer service, or other utilities will occur. Furthermore, there won’t be any roadway impacts or excavation work.
