The Town of Weston’s Department of Public Works is pleased to provide this annual water quality report to our customers, in accordance with state and federal regulations. This report also reminds you of the great effort the MWRA and Weston Water Division undertake to provide potable water that meets every applicable federal, state or local standard.
WESTON’S WATER SYSTEM:
The Weston Water Division maintains 116 miles of water distribution mains, 975 fire hydrants, and 3,613 water service connections. During 2022, the Town of Weston consumed 632 million gallons of water, an increase of 101 million gallons of water from the previous year. Weston’s daily average consumption for 2022 was 1.7 million gallons of water. The greatest amount of water pumped in one day during the year was 4,484,956 gallons of water on August 3rd. The Water Division collected 180 bacteria samples during 2022 to ensure the water quality meets the Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection drinking water standards. All tests were negative.
LEAK DETECTION:
Weston undergoes an annual leak detection survey to find water leaks in the distribution system. This year’s survey found three leaking fire hydrants, and four leaking water services. We also found one leaking water main. The leaks were promptly repaired and will reduce the amount of unaccounted water.
BACKFLOW PREVENTION:
Weston continues to enforce the DEP-mandated cross connection control and prevention program to prevent contamination of the public water distribution system. The Town conducted 558 backflow prevention device tests at 96 facilities in 2022. Ten devices failed and were re-tested.
HYDRANT FLUSHING & MAINTENANCE PROGRAM:
The Water Division completed the annual comprehensive flushing program in order to remove naturally occurring sediments, which if left in the water mains over time could cause taste, odor, and turbidity problems to consumers. Seven fire hydrants were found to have operational issues during our annual Fire Hydrant Flushing & Maintenance Program. These hydrants were refurbished or rehabilitated to meet modern specifications. Also, we added one additional hydrant to the water distribution system to improve water quality and fire protection.
WATER SYSTEM MAINTENANCE:
In 2022, the Water Division repaired seven water main breaks, and refurbished or rehabilitated seven leaking hydrants. We also oversaw and inspected the repair of thirteen water service leaks, and oversaw and inspected 34 water services that were updated with new water pipe, from either the main to curb or curb to house. In 2022, the Water Division added one new fire hydrant to improve water quality and fire protection. The Water Division staff upgraded over 92 water meters to modern metering equipment, and oversaw the upgrade of 71% of meters to smart meter technology in 2022.
LEAD AND COPPER IN YOUR WATER:
The Town of Weston is concerned about lead and copper in drinking water. Although the water we supply your home does not contain lead, the Weston Water Division tests water annually in homes that may contain lead bearing service lines, plumbing or fixtures. The Town tests twenty homes for evidence of lead once per year. The lead 90th percentile was 2.04 ppb (parts per billion), which is below the Action Level of 15 ppb. One resident’s home initially tested above the lead Action Level, then three more follow up tests were conducted at the same location, and all three tests were below the Action Level. The copper 90th percentile value was 94.2 ppb, which is below the Action Level of 1300 ppb. Also, two schools, both private early education and care facilities, were tested and were below the Action Levels for lead and copper.
Range | 90% Value | Action Level | MCLG | Samples Over Action Level | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Lead (ppb) | 0.20-28.20 ppb | 2.04 ppb | 15 ppb | 0 ppb | 1 |
Copper (ppb) | 19.6-110 ppb | 94.2 ppb | 1300 ppb | 1300 ppb | 0 |
