The Revere Department of Public Works is continuing to issue an annual newsletter to inform users about the water distribution system, as part of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority’s annual water quality report to consumers. The previous newsletter will be summarized for the benefit of all new customers.
OUR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM:
Revere purchases all potable water directly from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA). The water is delivered through five MWRA master meters into the city’s distribution system. This system consists of a network of pipes, valves, hydrants, and service lines. The system is also used for fire protection.
The Revere system is comprised of approximately 107 miles of water main, ranging from four to sixteen inches in diameter. There are approximately eight hundred and fifty hydrants that are owned and maintained by the city. Over one thousand gate valves allow isolation of portions of the system for repairs and maintenance. Much of the system is aging and although not a health problem, it can affect the appearance of the water.
The City of Revere is concerned about lead and copper in the water. The city tests twenty homes and two schools each year, as representative of all areas of the city. The 90th percentile level for lead in Revere was 14.8 ppb in September of 2022, which is below the action level of 15 ppb. The copper level in Revere was 70.8 ppb in September 2022, below the action level of 1300 ppb.
Range | 90% Value | Action Level | MCLG | Samples Over Action Level | |
Lead (ppb) | 0.08-25.40 ppb | 14.80 ppb | 15 ppb | 0 ppb | 2 |
Copper (ppb) | 6.1-110 ppb | 70.8 ppb | 1300 ppb | 1300 ppb | 0 |
The City of Revere Water and Sewer Department takes a minimum of 60 bacteriological or coliform samples each month to ensure the quality of the drinking water. The Environmental Protection Agency requires that no more than 5% of these samples test positive in a month. Test results in 2022 met the EPA and MassDEP standard.
The MWRA supplies the City with clean, high-quality water. System flushing and leak detection help to reduce turbidity and discoloration.
LEAD WATER SERVICES:
Most known lead services have been replaced over the last few years. The 82 services that remain are scheduled for replacement this year (2023).
CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PLAN
- Replace 18,500 linear feet on water main including hydrants, valves, and services to curb stop.
- Replace 9 valves and 23 hydrants throughout the city.
- Replace the remaining 82 lead services throughout the city.
