Public Water System Facts

The Marlborough DPW Water Division maintains approximately 180 miles of water mains, more than 1500 fire hydrants, and 3 water storage tanks. The system is maintained through leak detection, repairs to water main breaks, water main replacements, water main flushing, maintaining and replacing hydrants, as well as responding to the needs and concerns of our residents. We conduct a thorough water sampling and testing program to meet all State and Federal requirements. We also maintain an active Cross Connection Control Program, continuously surveying (inspecting) facilities and testing devices to protect the water system from contamination.

100 percent of the drinking water for 2022 was supplied by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA). In 2022, the City of Marlborough used 1.552 billion gallons of water with an average of 4.254 million gallons a day.

100 percent of the drinking water for 2021 was supplied by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA). In 2021, the City of Marlborough used 1.433 billion gallons of water with an average of 3.927 million gallons a day.

The City of Marlborough’s water system is routinely inspected by the MassDEP. MassDEP inspects our system for its technical, financial, and managerial capacity to provide safe drinking water to you. To ensure that we provide the highest quality of water available, the City of Marlborough’s drinking water system is operated by Massachusetts Certified Distribution and Treatment Operators who oversee the day-to-day operations of the system. Bacteria testing is conducted at 15 separate locations throughout the City three times per month. The City of Marlborough Department of Public Works Water & Sewer Division had no violations of State and Federal regulations in 2022.

While the water delivered to your property has no lead, lead can enter the water from the service line (the pipe that connects your house to the main), or from an interior brass plumbing fixture or lead solder. See pages 4 and 5 for more information. Over the past 5 years, Marlborough’s Lead Service Line Replacement Program has successfully replaced all known lead service lines in the City. Approximately 985 lead services were removed and replaced. The City will continue replacing water services that may contain lead fittings such as galvanized piping.

Every year we test homes that have a higher risk of having leaded materials. In 2022 we met the EPA standard, as our 90th percentile value was under the lead Action Level of 15 parts per billion (ppb). The test results are show below.
