The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) has arranged critical water pipeline maintenance and repairs to coincide with an upcoming scheduled shutdown of the MBTA railways in the vicinity of Walnut Street in the City of Somerville. In preparation for this work the water pipeline at this rail crossing will be isolated on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
There will be no interruption of water service; however, residents, businesses, and other organizations located within some neighborhoods in the City of Boston (Allston-Brighton, Charlestown, and East Boston), as well as those within the Cities of Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, and Somerville may possibly see some discolored water as a result of the pipe shutdown and redirected flow. If water discoloration occurs, please run faucets until water returns to normal clarity (it can take up to approximately 10 minutes) before drinking or using for dishes, laundry, or other household needs.
The pipeline is tentatively expected to return to normal operations by December 20, 2024. For any questions, please contact Troy Wall, MWRA Community Relations Liaison at Troy.Wall@MWRA.com or (617) 305-5762.
