On Saturday morning at 8am, MWRA experienced a four hour disruption of the ammonia chemical feed at the John J. Carroll Water Treatment Plant. There are no public health concerns and the DEP has been notified. No other chemical feed systems were affected.
MWRA adds chlorine and ammonia to form chloramines as a secondary disinfection treatment process to maintain a residual disinfectant throughout the distribution network, ensuring water quality at the consumer's tap. During the disruption, ammonia was not added to the system, however, chlorine was still being added to the drinking water and is a secondary disinfectant.
What does this mean? The water is safe to drink, however you may notice a chlorine odor or taste. This should pass within the next day, as the affected volume of water is low. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the MWRA’s Operation Center at (617) 305-5950.
