Fire Incident at Nut Island, Quincy 01/25/16 - 01/26/16

Update (2:16 p.m.) - Concrete cover has been lifted at Nut Island. Fire Department can now get at ductwork.

Update (3:45 p.m.) - The Quincy Fire Department reports that the fire is out and they are working on a few hot spots. Also, four of the five MWRA employees have been released from the hospital.

Update (2:16 p.m.) - Concrete cover has been lifted at Nut Island. Fire Department can now get at ductwork.

Update (10:04 a.m.) - The stubborn fire at Nut Island continues to smolder. A large crane is en route and will to try to remove the roof panel this morning so that the firefighters can douse the fire from above. There are no interruptions to sewer service and drinking water is not affected.

All five MWRA employees remain in the hospital and are in stable condition.

Update (5:45 p.m.) - The fire at Nut Island has started up again. Quincy Fire Department on site. Still no impacts to service.

Update (4:45 p.m.) - The fire appears to be out. Affected staff are reported to be doing well

Original Incident Notice (2:31 p.m.) - This afternoon, a fire broke out at the MWRA’s Nut Island Headworks facility on Sea Street in Quincy during maintenance activities. Five MWRA employees were in the building at the time and all have been transported to Boston Medical Center for smoke-related issues.

The fire is located in the lower level of the building, three stories down. The Nut Island Headworks provides screening for sewer flows from communities south of Boston and transports them through a 5-mile tunnel under Boston Harbor to Deer Island in Winthrop for treatment. There are no interruptions to sewer service. Drinking water is not affected.
