The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) will be working on a water pipeline project in the cities of Lynn and Revere, the Section 56 Saugus River Crossing Project. The project consists of the design and construction of a new water pipeline to replace the portion of MWRA’s Section 56, which was constructed in 1934 and originally crossed the Saugus River on the General Edwards Bridge. This pipeline was recently removed from the General Edwards Bridge due to severe corrosion. The new pipeline will be installed under the Saugus River.
This project will consist of four phases: a preliminary design investigation and report for the proposed pipeline replacement, final design, bidding and award and construction. The design and bidding phases are expected to be completed by early 2022, immediately followed by the award of the pipeline construction contract. The project is expected to be completed by 2023. There will be more details available after the design is completed.
Fieldwork in the Communities:
The preliminary design phase of the project is currently underway and, in the coming weeks, the consultant will need access to properties in the area to conduct field activities, such as surveying, wetlands delineation and, historical survey. The field activities will consist of one or two person crew (s) with surveying equipment, conducting a base mapping survey, locating utilities, marking out the wetlands borders locations and identifying historical structures. Aside from the occasional small wire flag to mark wetland areas, properties will not be disturbed. The work will take approximately two weeks to complete. MWRA has notified local City officials and agencies to inform them of the proposed project and to coordinate activities for the project.
MWRA has also developed a notification system for communicating information to residents regarding construction projects called EverBridge. Once you sign up, you are able to receive electronic updates on the progress of a construction project. We encourage all residents to sign up for the updates for the MWRA Saugus River Crossing Project by entering your email address here.
