MWRA Maintenance Work May Cause Discolored Water & Lower Pressure in Parts of Malden

affected area

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority is currently excavating an inoperable valve for replacement on Cross Street at Greenwood Court in Malden. Work will take place Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:00 pm. Cross Street will be closed and detoured between Hancock Street and Main Street during daytime work hours,  in order for MWRA vehicles to occupy the roadway for excavation and replacement work. Commuters should expect some traffic slowdown when traveling in this area during working hours. This work will take approximately two weeks to complete. See map (PDF) for a clear location.

As the work progresses, MWRA will isolate the water main on Cross Street for valve replacement to proceed. Malden residents in the area may experience discolored water or slightly reduced pressure from the water main shutdown. If discolored water does occur, it will result from a small amount of iron in local pipes. Please note that iron will stain light colored items in your laundry, especially when bleach is used. Residents should check water clarity before washing any white or lighter colored laundry during this period of work. Residents may want to wait for the water to clear before using it.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact MWRA Community Relations Manager, Jeffrey McLaughlin at (617) 305-5762 or jeffrey.mclaughlin@mwra.com.
