MWRA Maintenance Work May Cause Discolored Water & Lower Pressure in Parts of Medford

Important Notice, July 23, 2021
Please be advised that on Monday, July 26, 2021, water service to approximately 40 houses along Hillsboro Road, Raymond Street, and Fells Avenue between the Fellsway and Rock Glen Road in Medford (see map for work area) will be temporarily unavailable from approximately 9AM until 5PM. More information about this important maintenance project is below.
affected area

The MWRA will be replacing inoperable valves on Fells Ave near Fellsway West.  Normal water service will be restored at the end of the workday. Although not expected, discolored water may be possible for 1 to 2 days following this work. If discolored water does occur, it will result from a small amount of iron in local pipes. Please note that iron will stain light colored items in your laundry, especially when bleach is used. Residents should check water clarity before washing any white or lighter colored laundry during this period of work.  Residents may want to wait for the water to clear before using it.

Once finished, MWRA will use these replaced valves to isolate and repair a water main leak on Fellsway West. This work will begin the following week in August, and is not expected to impact your water service. The MWRA appreciates your cooperation during this important water system maintenance project.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact MWRA Community Coordinator, Jeffrey McLaughlin at (617) 305-5762 or jeffrey.mclaughlin@mwra.com.

Update July 16, 2021:

On Monday, July 19, 2021 the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority will begin excavating inoperable valves for replacement on Fells Ave on Fellsway West in Medford. Work will take place Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 4:00 pm. There will be no parking available in order for MWRA vehicles to occupy the roadway for excavation and replacement work. This work will take approximately two weeks to complete. Commuters may expect some traffic slowdown when traveling along Fellsway West in this area during working hours.. See map (PDF) for a clear location.

Tentatively scheduled for Monday, July 26, 2021 is a temporary service interruption for nearby houses along Hillsboro Road, Raymond Street, and Fells Ave between the Fellsway and Rock Glen Road. Isolation is expected to last from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, but could be longer depending on work completion. While not expected,  residents in areas of northern Medford may experience discolored water or slightly reduced pressure from the meter shutdown.

Once finished, these replacement valves will allow MWRA to repair a water main leak on Fellsway West without impact to your water service.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact MWRA Community Relations Manager, Jeffrey McLaughlin at (617) 305-5762 or jeffrey.mclaughlin@mwra.com.
