MWRA Work May Cause Discolored Water, Temporary Pressure
Changes or Service Loss in Parts of
, Canton, Dedham, Westwood and Stoughton

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is currently constructing a new 5.4 mile 36-inch diameter water main within in Boston, Dedham and Westwood.  The new pipeline will provide a redundant water supply to Norwood, Canton, Dedham-Westwood and Stoughton.  On November 18, 2019 the Contractor will install the new pipeline in Dedham that crosses underneath the existing pipeline supplying Dedham-Westwood, Norwood, Stoughton and Canton.  The work is anticipated to last a week and no service interruptions are planned.   Staff are taking precautionary steps to ensure that the existing pipeline stays protected during the construction.

In the event of an emergency, the existing pipeline supplying Norwood, Canton, Dedham-Westwood and Stoughton may need to be isolated and neighboring communities will redirect water to provide a water supply.  Residents may notice changes in water taste or odor if these alternatives supplies are used.  If an emergency isolation is required, residents may experience temporary loss of pressure, service and discolored water.  If discolored water does occur, it is the result of a small amount of iron in local pipes.  Please note that iron will stain light colored items in your laundry, especially when bleach is used.  Residents should check water clarity before washing any white or lighter colored laundry during this period of work.  Residents should wait for the water to clear before using it.

If such an emergency isolation is required, the MWRA will also provide the affected communities with as much advance notification as possible prior to rerouting water.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact MWRA Community Relations Manager, Jeffrey McLaughlin at (617) 305-5762 or, or or call MWRA’s 24-hour water phone line at 617-305-5950.
