MWRA PIPELINE WORK TO BEGIN IN LOWER MILLS, DORCHESTER

Construction work on MWRA's Southern Spine Section 107 Phase 2 will begin in the Lower Mills section of Dorchester (Boston) on April 18, 2011.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

MWRA's Southern Spine Distribution Mains are the major water distribution pipelines for Milton, Quincy and the Southeast corner of Boston. Parts of the Southern Spine were built in the early 1900s. Some sections are very old and unlined; they have been functioning at only 50% of their original carrying capacity for years because of tuberculation (rust build-up and pocking) along the pipeline walls.

This project is being constructed in five phases, with the first three completed. It includes connections to MWRA's new Blue Hills Covered Storage Facility and the rehabilitation of more than 12 miles of water mains, valves and meters.

The Southern Spine Project will greatly increase the pipeline's delivery capacity. It will also extend its overall life span by at least 50 years and provide much-needed system redundancy for its service communities in the event of a major water main break upstream.

THIS SEGMENT

On December 16, 2009, MWRA awarded the Southern Spine 107 Phase 2 Project to RJV Construction Corp., Inc. The $14.5 million project includes the replacement of 1.7 miles of 48-inch diameter water main and the relining of an additional 4,000 feet of pipe.

Construction began in February 2010 along Adams Street in East Milton Square. The next phase of work will begin on April 18, 2011 in the Lower Mills section of Boston.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS

This work will require periodic road closures/diversions on Washington Street, Adams Street and River Street between April and November. (See construction update map for current schedule.)

If you have any questions or concerns about this project, please contact Jeffrey McLaughlin, MWRA Public Affairs (617) 660-7976.

Regular updates will be posted on mwra.com.
