MWRA Appoints Two Additional Members to Panel Investigating
May 1 Water Main Break

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority announced today the appointment of the remaining members of the expert panel that will be investigating the cause of the massive water main break that occurred in Weston on May 1, 2010.

The appointees are Ronald Ballinger [pdf], Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering at MIT, and the Director of the H. H. Uhlig Corrosion Laboratory; and John H. Bambei, Jr. [pdf], Chief of Engineering for Denver Water and Chairman of the American Waterworks Associations' Committee on Steel Pipe. They will be joining Wentworth Institute President Zorica Pantić, who will chair the panel.

The panel is charged with investigating the probable causes of the water main break and preparing a report of its findings and recommendations identifying any design, construction or other defects or deficiencies in any aspect of the work which may allow the MWRA to pursue cost recovery.

MWRA is fortunate to have the help of these three prominent individuals who possess the variety of experience and expertise necessary to tackle the task at hand.  No substantial portion of the coupling has been found to date, but the search continues, and finding it would aid the investigation.  Regardless, MWRA is confident that the panel will be able to shed light on the cause of the break.
