MWRA to Hold Public Meeting on Water Pipeline Rehabilitation Project in Somerville

On Monday, October 28 the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority will be holding a public meeting to discuss the Spot Pond Supply Mains Rehabilitation Project at Somerville City Hall in the Alderman’s Chamber. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM.

Due to the project’s impacts on streets, traffic and residential areas, the meeting is being held to inform the public of the construction schedule and to give area residents a chance to discuss the details of the project.

The East and West Spot Pond Supply Mains are MWRA’s principal transmission mains for its Northern Low Service Area, which supplies parts of Boston, Cambridge, Charlestown, Chelsea, East Boston, Everett, Malden, Medford, and Somerville. The overall project consists of rehabilitating large sections of cast-iron pipe which were constructed from 1897 to 1900. Access pits in Somerville streets will be needed to allow construction equipment and workers to reach the water pipelines and also to replace several water meters and valves.

During the course of the project, which is slated to be complete in 2006, there will be some construction work in the following Somerville streets:

Union Square: December 2002 to April 2003;
Somerville Avenue (Union Square to Porter Square): September 2002 through April 2003;
Bow Street: October 2002 through January 2003;
Walnut Street (Bow to Pearl Streets): October 2002 through January 2003;
Pearl Street: November 2002 through April 2003;
Webster Street: December 2002 through May 2003;
Willow Street: May 2003 through August 2003;
Walnut Street (Pearl to Broadway): August 2005 through December 2005;
Fellsway West: August 2005 through December 2005;
Middlesex-Fells Parkway at Wellington Bridge: April 2004 through October 2004;
Middlesex-Fells Parkway Assembly Square to Mystic Avenue Connector: November 2005 through March 2006.

Construction work has already begun on some streets. The street construction schedules, especially those in future years, are rough estimates.

MWRA’s construction contractor on this project is P. Gioioso & Sons, Inc, with W. Walsh Company as a subcontractor.
