MWRA Announces Work to Begin on West Roxbury Tunnel Rehabilitation Project

Residents should be aware the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority will begin the rehabilitation of the New Haven Street Drop Chamber during the week of July 30th.

The contractor, R. Zoppo Corp., will close New Haven Street near house numbers 97, 86, 85, and 80. New Haven Street will be impassable at the above location for approximately 12 months.

The City of Boston Public Safety, Public Works and Transportation departments have been notified and a detour route will be posted.

The project was initiated in 1999 when the MWRA discovered that the 84-inch diameter sewer at New Haven Drop Chamber was in critical need of repair. The tunnel conveys wastewater from West Roxbury, Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Needham, Dedham, Newton and Brookline to the High Level Sewer in Hyde Park. From there, it continues to the Nut Island Headworks and Deer Island Treatment Plant before it is eventually discharged into Massachusetts Bay.

MWRA apologizes for any inconveniences caused by this project. For more information on the meeting or the project, call Jeff McLaughlin MWRA Public Affairs, 617-788-1197.
