Dear Water Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to review this sixth annual water quality report provided to you in partnership with the Saugus Public Works Department and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA). We are pleased to be working with the MWRA in providing information regarding the quality of our drinking water. This annual report provides detailed information on MWRA’s source reservoirs and the quality of drinking water as determined through state and federal guidelines. The Town of Saugus purchases water from the MWRA. The Water Department delivers about 3 million gallons of water to Saugus residents each day.

The year 2003 was a good year for installation of new 8“ ductile pipes for problem areas of the water system. The water project was finished in 2003. The installation was on Clinton, Marshall, Freeman, Webster, part of Westland, Morris, Adler, Floyd, Jackson, Granite, Bond Place, and Bonds Street. All streets had new mains and copper services to the property. All roads were resurfaced and a punch list was completed.

Starting in May 2004, a new 8“ ductile water main will be installed on Main Street from Summer Street to Pierce Memorial Drive. The “No Interest Loan” from MWRA is the best program that Saugus has applied for. It has been a great help.

The town has approximately 130 miles of water main. There are approximately 8,500 meters. Also approximately 1,250 hydrant have been kept in service. From July 1, 2003 - March 5, 2004, there were a total of 79 water breaks; the cause was the 4th coldest winter in 112 years.

Flushing is done every year, especially on dead end mains. Water samples are taken to the MWRA laboratory in Somerville. The samples are tested for turbidity and Coliform. Saugus did not have any problems for 2003 on sampling. Hopefully, 2004 will be another great year for the water system.

We hope you find this report informative and useful. If you require more information or have any questions, call the Saugus Water Department at 781-231-4145. Additional phone numbers for the MWRA and EPA can be found in the report.
