Water Conservation

Water is a vital resource. It provides life for humans and animals alike. People use water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and bathing. Now, why should we reduce the amount of water we use? One reason is that water costs money. If you use less water you could also save money. A second reason is that even though water goes through the process of the water cycle it still can be scarce, especially in droughts. If we save water we will have more water in times like droughts. A third reason is that when we reduce water usage we save energy. The entire environment can benefit from this. What are some ways that we can save water? Let's see.

One way to save water is to take showers instead of baths. Showers use less water than baths. Don't take 30-minute showers though. You should only take 10-minute showers otherwise you are probably using more water than a bath. Also when you are taking a shower wash your face in it. This way you don't use extra water outside the shower. Girls, do this when you have conditioner in your hair. Next, turn off the water when you brush your teeth. This way you aren't wasting water. Another way to save water is use your shower towel twice before putting it in the wash. This way you won't have to do as many loads. Also, use one cup a day, and rinse it after you use it each time. This way the dishwasher isn't as filled so it doesn't run as often.

If you drink out of a water bottle use a reusable one. This way you know it is definitely yours and not someone else's plastic water bottle. Many times people drink out of a water bottle, put it down, and forget about it or mix it up with someone else's so it ends up being thrown away. Also if you don't finish your water bottle don't dump the water down the drain, but water the flowers. Only fill your water bottle with the amount of water you need to drink. Many hoses have a large nozzle on them so when you water the flowers you may use a lot of extra water. Instead you can use a watering can. Many people water their grass with a sprinkler. You might be able to fix the sprinkler to water both the grass and the surrounding plants. When you go out you may be out longer than you expect so turn the sprinkler off. It takes a lot of water to fill a pool in the summer so try to keep the water in the pool so you don't have to refill it. If everyone in the community does even just a few of these simple tasks a lot of water could be conserved! Then when we accomplish these tasks we will have a much healthier environment!
