MWRA Soil Boring Begins Aug 28
Boring Readies Town for Water Transmission Upgrades

map of location

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is planning to upgrade water transmission pipes in Arlington. As part of the design effort, MWRA has hired CDM Smith, Inc. and other firms to perform sub-surface exploration activities on/near existing pipelines along a path across Town (see map, PDF).

The soil boring activities involve blocking off a small area of the road with a truck and a boring rig, and drilling down to a depth of 15 to 35 feet and removing the soil samples. At each location the work will take 4-5 hours. MWRA has 21 sites planned for Arlington. The locations are shown in Table 1 below. Notification letters will be sent to abutters.

Work will begin the week of August 28th and will occur between 8AM and 3PM, Monday through Friday. Construction Zone Safety Plans, including local police details in certain locations, will be provided for traffic control, and ensuring worker and general public safety in each area.

Phase 2 will be conducted during final design, next year, and will consist of up to an additional 56 test borings strategically located to supplement the Phase 1 borings.

Phase I is scheduled to begin the week of August 28, 2017 and continue until through October 2017. Work will typically occur between 7AM and 5PM, Monday through Friday. Construction Zone Safety Plans, including local police details in certain locations, will be provided for traffic control, and ensuring worker and general public safety in each area.
