The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority is replacing a portion of the Millbrook Valley Relief Sewer, which runs along the Minuteman Bicycle Path in Lexington. This construction project will replace the corroded portion of the existing 24-inch ductile iron force main sewer pipe. To complete this work, the contractor will set up two access pits excavated at the upstream and downstream ends of work. The new pipe will be fused above ground along the shoulder of the bicycle path and pulled through the existing ductile iron pipe with a winch. Police details will be present during construction. However, bike path users should exercise caution in the work zone. Intermittent, temporary closures/detours and delays are expected. Constructed in 1986, Section 93A serves Hanscom Air Force Base and the Towns of Bedford and Lexington. Internal video inspections conducted in February 1999 revealed significant levels of corrosion in the upper reaches of the gravity sewer. During the rehabilitation of the gravity sewer in 2004, it was discovered that the force main had also experienced significant corrosion. MWRA’s contractor, Revoli Construction Company, will be working in late September through January 2007. All areas affected by construction activity will be restored to pre-construction conditions in the Spring of 2007.
